States & Territories:This is definitely the last frontier. Most remote place I have ever been to. Rugged limestone gorges, vast pastoral properties of several million acres, remote waterfalls and lots of ancient aboriginal culture.
You go thru little hamlets which have one shop. I saw one in Fitzroy Crossing which said “Our meat is tuff, tasteless, and fatty, but we are the only butcher in town” Another little place, Halls Creek – two stores – had a sign “if we don’t have it you don’t need it”. I stayed at a remote cattle station – El Questo - which was fantastic. Lots of interesting places, like Kununurra, Lake Argyle Diamond Mine which has pink and orange diamonds for one million dollars a carat. Don’t drive yourself in this region. Take a tour, or do a private car and driver. The Gibb River road is a 800 mile track so rocky the fillings in your teeth fall out. A good route is Darwin to Broome. This was the pearl capital of the world, and the sunsets on Cable Beach at the Indian Ocean are out of this world.
Visit the Willy Creek Pearl Farm – amazing experience. If you seek adventure, visit the spectacular beaches and coastline of the Dampier Peninsula or cruise the pristine waters of the Buccaneer Archipelago. There are two cruises which sail from Broome to Darwin which is an off the beaten track experience. |
