Map of New Zealand

New Zealand is a trout fisherman’s paradise. Both the North and South Islands offer excellent stream fishing for browns and rainbows. The North Island offers anglers a chance to fish on water holding the purest strain of brown trout in the world. The reputation draws anglers from far and wide in search of a trophy fish. Trout in excess of 10lbs are caught each year. The average size of a trout is 3 to 4 pounds so New Zealand’s offer a great thrill. From many of the luxury fishing lodges, you and your guide can take a helicopter to remote rivers.

February is the most popular month for Americans to fish New Zealand. Weather is hot and settled, streams are at their lowest, wading is easy and the trout most visible. Many guides believe that November is the best month to fish for browns. Cost of a guide can vary from place to place but average is $350 a day.

If you are a sports fisherman, the Bay of Islands is a great place for Marlin fishing. Most of the luxury lodges are in lovely locations, and offer great food.
