On the drive south from Auckland to Rotorua you can visit Matamata off Route 27, a less busy, more interesting road that boasts the highest accident rates in NZ (so caution is needed). Matamata has gained notoriety as the location of Hobbitton (from the Lord of the Rings trilogy). The set is now a tourist attraction.
